As these are now coming in really different sizes they will be sold by the kg. A round to pear-shaped fruit with a dark green skin the flesh of the avocado provides a rich buttery flavour when eaten fresh or added as an ingredient to a variety of foods. Generally pale yellow to green in colour, the flesh colour varies with the variety of the avocado, ranging from yellowish green to purple or black in colour.

Bananas are one of the most heavily sprayed crops so try to buy organic when you can. To ripen bananas faster, put them in a brown bag with an apple and close it for a day or two. If they get brown before you can eat them, make banana bread or put pieces (without the skin) into a freezer bag to use for smoothies! Since bananas are a food that our little ones enjoy, it is particularly important that they be organic.

The butternut squash is a long, pear-shaped vegetable covered with a smooth tan skin that surrounds a golden-orange, somewhat fibrous flesh. Seeds are only found in the rounded end and it has a sweet flavoured, buttery smooth flesh which is great for puddings, pies and savoury casseroles.

Fennel is a crisp vegetable that grows as a greenish-white bulb containing tubular stalks topped with feathery leaves. The bulb can be cleaned, sliced, and used in salads or sautéed and combined with other ingredients, providing a slight licorice flavor. The stalks can be cut and used raw or cooked for soups and sauces. The outer stalks should be discarded if they are bruised or discolored. The feathery can be used as a garnish. For storage, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for up to a week.

The distinctive flavour of fresh garlic is released in varying intensities, depending of the method of preparation.
